Heart Shaped Cupcakes for Two Recipe

Two Heart Shaped Cupcakes on a white cake stand against a granite countertop

Do you ever have those nights where you're in that relaxing stage between dinner and bedtime and you get the biggest craving for chocolate cake? I do.

Nightly.

JK but I did get one the other night. Sam offered to go to the grocery store and pick something up for me (he's the greatest), but I decided to try and find a super quick and easy recipe. I stumbled upon a cake recipe for two cupcakes from The Comfort of Cooking, which was perfect. With Valentine's Day being tomorrow, I formed them into hearts, topped them with a simple American buttercream and some pretty decorations, and gave one to Sam. Can you say adorable?

Heart Shaped Chocolate Cupcakes for Two
Cake recipe from The Comfort of Cooking
Ingredients:
3 tbsp flour
2 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp cocoa powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/8 tsp salt
3 tbsp milk
1 tbsp vegetable or canola oil
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 350°. Mix flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt to combine. Add milk, oil, and vanilla and mix until just combined (do not over mix).
Pinch top and bottom of two foil baking liners to form heart shapes. Place in a standard cupcake tin. Pour batter into liners until 2/3 full. Crumple small pieces of foil and place at the top divot and bottom points to help the liner hold its shape.
Bake for 20-22 minutes until toothpick inserted into center of cupcakes comes out clean. Let cool completely before frosting.

Vanilla Buttercream Frosting for Two
Ingredients:
2 tbsp unsalted butter, room temperature
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp cream or milk
Dash of vanilla extract
Whip butter with fork until fluffy. Add sugar 1/8 of a cup at a time, mixing between additions. After adding the first 1/8 cup of sugar, also add the cream and vanilla.

Fill sandwich bag with buttercream and snip off the corner. Pipe frosting onto cupcakes, first outlining the heart, then filling in the center. Smooth with the back of a butterknife and decorate as desired.
